Thursday night quickly escalated from a long awaited alpine hiking trip to what will most likely be one of the most memorable excursions of 2021.
I caught a ski plane flight up to the grand plateau, beneath Aoraki Mount Cook with a group of friends on Thursday morning to do some glacier hiking, take some photos and spend the night in plateau hut.
One thing that hadn’t even crossed my mind was that the forecast was for a particularly strong display of aurora.
This was mentioned on the evening weather report over the hut radio, so once the sky was looking sufficiently dark, we ventured back outside onto the snow outside the hut.
What a treat we were in for!
This was among the strongest aurora displays I’ve witnessed in the southern hemisphere.
This really was the cherry on top of a truly incredible trip to the grand plateau that for me, has been on the cards for over 2 years!
